Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced web developer, this series of articles will walk you through the entire process of setting up your own WordPress website. I’ll show you which services and techniques I use for a safe and secure website installation.
Even though I’m a “real” web developer, WordPress is by far the easiest solution to get a website up and running very quickly. I can generally setup a WordPress website from start to finish in just a few hours. A hand-coded custom website could take a few days to a few weeks, depending in the complexity.
There are many different software packages you can use to build your website such as Drupal, Joomla, Squarespace, and many others. We use WordPress because it’s so easy for our clients to maintain and we use Bluehost because it’s so easy for us to use. The secret to our speed is to use the same hosting company, the same software package, and the same Framework every time.
Our winning combination is: Bluehost, WordPress, and the Genesis Framework. The most recent web trend is to have a one page website, but if you need a quick, secure, multi-page solution, Genesis is the way to go. Over the next few weeks we’ll walk you through the process:
- Purchase a Hosting Solution
- Install WordPress as a “Clean” Install
- Install The Genesis Framework
- Install a Child Theme
- Customize Your Child Theme
- Choose and Install Plugins
- Secure your Installation from Hackers
Let’s get started…
Go to Bluehost.com and select the “get started now” link, which takes you to the select your plan page. I suggest choosing the business pro plan (currently $13.95 per month), because you get so much more for your money. The added benefits of the business pro plan include:
- 1 SSL (Secure Socket Layer), which gives your site an extra layer of security
- 1 Dedicated IP Address, which is much better than sharing an IP address with hundreds of other websites
- SiteBackup Pro which allows you to easily backup your entire website to help prevent disasters
- …and provides Higher Performance than the other plans
Next, select the plan you want. You’ll be taken to the “sign-up” screen.
From here you can either search for a new Domain name or use your existing Domain name. If your current website is hosted with another hosting company and you sign-up using an existing Domain name, you’ll be issued a temporary URL so you can navigate to your new website until you’re ready to switch over to Bluehost.
Since Bluehost offers 1 free Domain name with any hosting plan, you can use your free Domain name to create another website later. Bluehost also allows you to host an unlimited amount of websites from a single account for no extra charge. I currently have six different websites operating from a single account.
The next step is to confirm your plan and fill-in your account, package, and billing information. Once you have confirmed the correct info, you will be taken to the Homepage. As of this writing, there is a completely new interface, making it even easier to navigate from section to section. You should take the time to become familiar with where everything is and what options are available.
To be continued…
Stay tuned next week to learn how to install your website.
